Undercaps

Kichler makes a 3" undercap light that comes in 5 different colors, and is about a half and inch less wide than the 3 inch version volt makes. The Volt light is over 4" wide with the housing, while the Kichler one is 3.5" wide total. Helps in tight spots, and can be color matched to the stone we use, rather than just that ugly bronze for everything.
recommends spacing undercap lights on retaining or seating walls every 5’ to 6’

Sconce Lights

In order to hide wires, the max distance a sconce light can be from the top of the post is 30”
Our drills may not be long enough for sconce lighting if structure has extra tall posts. Do not cut channel in the post to run wiring. It may cause warranty issues. Cut the channel and run wiring on angle bracket instead.

Path Lights

It depends on the area you need to illuminate, your terrain, the effect you'd like to achieve and the beam spread of the fixtures you select. For example, our produce roughly a 16-foot diameter beam spread. For continuous illumination along a flat path, they'd be spaced about 16 feet apart. For independent pools of light, they'd be spaced about 20 feet apart. On the other hand, our have a 3-foot diameter beam spread. They'd be spaced about 3 feet apart for continuous illumination along path, or 4.5 feet apart for independent pools of light.
Bear in mind, a fixture is generally placed very near the beginning and end of the path. Let's say you're using the Max Spread on a 50-foot path; you'd add 16 feet to account for the two beginning/end fixtures, because half of their light will extend beyond the path. The 66-foot length divided by a 16-foot beam spread would 4.125 fixtures, which you might round up to five. Or for the Mushroom Mini, you'd add 8 feet. So, 58 feet divided by the 8-foot beam spread is 7.25 fixtures, which you might round up to eight.
Path lights can be placed all along one side of a walkway - but it usually looks better if they're staggered or laid out in a zig-zag fashion. Be sure to factor that into your measurements when deciding how many fixtures you need. If you have a wide path and you're using a zig-zag pattern, then you wouldn't just measure the length of the path; you'd need to measure the length of the zig-zag pattern from fixture to fixture.
for Max Spread Path Light is 16’ to 20’

Step Lights

Step lights should be spaced 36”-72” apart, depending on the width of the stairs. For narrow stairs 36” or less, a single light in the middle is ideal. Treads wider than 36” multiple lights are ideal to light up the whole stair.

Installation

We can’t install can lights with standard open rafters. We have to charge more to install T&G between rafters and drop it down to leave room for can lights
However, elite roofs can have can lights even without T&G. Elite roofs have a built in electrical channel inside the panel so the wire is hidden.

Placement

Do not place can lights above a fan. Make sure they are outside of the fan blades to avoid a flickering effect.

Spacing

A good general rule for placement is to divide the height of the ceiling by two. The result is the amount of space to leave between each light.
For example, recessed lighting spacing for an 8-foot-high ceiling would be 4 feet between each light. This will provide good spacing for general room lighting. Remember that ideal light placement can differ from room to room. Proper placement of recessed lighting in a kitchen may require more creative placements, since much of the light needed there is task oriented.
Counter areas can be downlit to provide light and create minimal shadows for people working in the space. Try aiming the lights toward the edges of counters so the light pools ahead of where a person would normally stand. Leaving about 14 to 18 inches of space between the light cannisters and the cabinets will also help avoid lost light.
