Retaining Walls

General

All patios and pool decks should include at least 1 row of retaining wall around the perimeter
Need minimum of 6’ of space for geogrid. For instance you can’t have a Stonegate retaining wall less than 6’ away from the pool. The pool will interfere with the geogrid.
Easton wall block can not be used for retaining walls
We need engineering and a building permit for retaining walls 3' and higher

Engineering Details

Follow drainage specifications
Reference engineering details for footer heel width and distance that footer extends beyond the retaining wall
Half a course min. to be buried.
Footings for CMU Retaining Walls should ALWAYS be a minimum of 4” below grade (anywhere between 4"-8" below grade), increments of 4" since that is half of a CMU block.

Plans for Design Guides

Any project with CMU walls needs to have three pages in the design guide outlining the wall components; one for footer details, one for rebar details, and one for CMU course details. The chart below should be added to every page regarding the CMU walls. The Layout version of this chart can be found in the document linked below as well. Walls taller than 4’-0” will require an amended chart.
Provide elevations to top of block walls and elevations to the top of the concrete footing on Design Guide
Provide Footing Layout/Placement & Footing Elevations on Design Guide. See examples of Justin Dennis and Mahony below.
