Steps

Label depth of each step on plans
Risers shall have a maximum uniform height of 12", except the top riser, which may vary but shall not exceed 12". Ideally, max step risers to be 8.5".
On shallow end stairs, the bottom riser height is allowed to vary to the floor. The bottom riser shall not exceed 12" to the floor for the width of the walking surface.
15-18" tread for first step If configurations allows. Top step tread can be 12" if needed, 12" standard for the remaining treads. 10" minimum tread
All pools—whether public or private—must be provided with a ladder or steps in the shallow end where water depth exceeds 24 inches.
In private pools where water depth exceeds 5 feet, there must be ladders, stairs or underwater benches/swimouts in the deep end.
Where manufactured diving equipment is to be used, benches or swimouts shall be recessed or located in a corner.
Explain the pros and cons of different step configurations to the client. Show them the step down height from the pool deck to the sunshelf with a step and without a step. Include diagram below on the design approval. Indicate which option they chose.
